Tourism is the world's largest industry and accounts for 75 per cent of all global travel. In 2003, tourism spending totalled nearly $67 billion in Canada, a 4.6 per cent increase over 2002. This spending generates approximately $7.7 billion on federal taxes and $7 billion in provincial taxes.
The regional profile reports have been prepared in order to illustrate the characteristics of tourists not only visiting the province, but also segmenting them into our 8 tourism regions. As well, this series of reports will help to identify new and continuing trends within the province.
*Please note that latest data available from Statistics Canada is from 2004. Due to methodology changes and other issues, Statistics Canada has been experiencing major difficulties in meeting the release targets for 2005 and 2006 data. Barring any further complications, Statistics Canada is expecting the 2006 tourism statistics to be released as early as April 2008, which will allow Travel Manitoba to process and update the "Value of Tourism" report for July, 2008. The 2007 data year is expected to be released from Statistics Canada in late summer/early fall 2008.
