The Manitoba tourism industry recorded a healthy year in 2007, ranking first in tourism expenditure growth compared to all other provinces and territories. According the latest statistics released by Statistics Canada, total expenditures in Manitoba increased by 10.4% from $1.12 billion in 2006 to $1.24 billion in 2007 (approx 3% of GDP). Despite the rise in expenditures however, 2007 visitation remained flat, increasing only 0.2% to 8,036,000 due to a 5.5% drop in same day visitors.
The regional profile reports have been prepared in order to illustrate the characteristics of tourists not only visiting the province, but also segmenting them into our 8 tourism regions. As well, this series of reports will help to identify new and continuing trends within the province.
*Please note that latest data available from Statistics Canada is from 2004. Due to methodology changes and other issues, Statistics Canada has been experiencing major difficulties in meeting the release targets for 2005 and 2006 data. Barring any further complications, Statistics Canada is expecting the 2006 tourism statistics to be released as early as April 2008, which will allow Travel Manitoba to process and update the "Value of Tourism" report for July, 2008. The 2007 data year is expected to be released from Statistics Canada in late summer/early fall 2008.
