The Manitoba tourism industry recorded a healthy year in 2007, ranking first in tourism expenditure growth compared to all other provinces and territories. According the latest statistics released by Statistics Canada, total expenditures in Manitoba increased by 10.4% from $1.12 billion in 2006 to $1.24 billion in 2007 (approx 3% of GDP). Despite the rise in expenditures however, 2007 visitation remained flat, due mainly to a 5.5% drop in same day visitors.
Spending on tourism helps support over 5,300 businesses and directly sustains about 13,600 jobs. Tourism in Manitoba currently generates $628.1 million in export revenue, $250 million in provincial tax revenues and $70.7 million in Municipal tax revenues.
Nationally, in 2007, tourism spending totalled $70.8 billion in Canada, an increase of 6% over 2006. This spending generates approximately $9.3 billion in federal taxes and $9.1 billion in provincial taxes.
